Geothermal Energy Facts

Welcome to the Geothermal Energy Facts section.

Within this section of the website, you’ll find information about the Australian Geothermal Energy Association, and about the broader geothermal energy industry.  This is a good place to start if you are looking for:

  • About Geothermal Energy
This page provides information about the geothermal industry in Australia.
  • An overview of the Australian projects that are currently underway
Visit the “Australian Projects Overview” section for an overview of the geothermal projects currently under development, slated for development, and those which have been provided government funding.  This section is updated regularly.
  • Frequently Asked Questions
“Frequently Asked Questions” details questions and answers relating to the different types of geothermal energy under development in Australia and around the world.
  • Presentations, publications and reports
The “Reports and Publications” area houses reports commissioned by AGEA – such as MMA’s “Installed capacity and generation from geothermal sources by 2020” report; as well as past presentations and the Geothermal Reporting Code.
  • Fact sheets
AGEA has created some fact sheets to help explain what geothermal energy is and how it works.  The fact sheets are available for print and download, and are an excellent resource for students researching geothermal energy.
  • Submissions
It is an important part of AGEA’s role to lobby and provide information to government to help inform decisions regarding Australia’s energy future.  The Submissions section containsl the documents submitted to government since AGEA’s incorporation.
  • Interactive presentation
Visit this page to access an interactive demonstration of how some Australian companies are developing geothermal energy using the Enhanced Geothermal Systems process (also know as hot dry rocks, or hot fractured rocks.)  The demonstration steps through how each part of the process works.
